Strategies for finding empirical studies and research articles
Welcome
When you are making an argument or trying to support a claim, incorporating statistics, data, or quantitative information will stengthen your research. When you are looking for statistics, you may find the information in any one of the following resources:
- Scholarly articles and books
- Newspapers and magazines
- Databases provided by the government and other institutions
- Reports and analysis published by government agencies
This guide is a starting point for locating statistics. When you are looking for quantitative information to support a hypothesis, think about the type of information. For example, do you want data about:
- A local issue?
- A national trend?
- An international problem?
This guide will help you locate local, state, national, and international data. Most of the resources listed are freely available on the internet. "UWEC Only" indicates resources requiring UW-Eau Claire login.
Remember, if you haven't found the kind of statistics you're looking for, or if you need assistance with the resources listed here, contact Robin Miller, Government Publications Librarian.
